The role:
We’re looking for a SQL Database Administrator (SQL DBA) to join our team and help ensure the performance, availability, integrity, and reliability of our Microsoft SQL Server environments supporting business-critical applications.
The role will focus on administering SQL Server databases, investigating and resolving database-related incidents, optimising database performance, maintaining high availability, and supporting controlled data changes where required. You will work closely with our SRE, development, and application support teams to ensure our database platforms remain secure, resilient, and performant.

Tasks & responsibilities include:
- Administer, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments across production and non-production systems.
- Investigate and resolve database-related incidents, performance issues, and operational problems.
- Monitor database health, availability, capacity, and performance, proactively identifying potential issues.
- Analyse blocking, deadlocks, long-running queries, and resource utilisation to optimise database performance.
- Write, troubleshoot, and optimise SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and views.
- Perform controlled data fixes in accordance with change management, governance, and audit requirements.
- Validate database changes to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and consistency.
- Manage SQL Server Agent jobs, scheduled maintenance tasks, and automated operational processes.
- Support SQL Server backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures, including recovery testing where required.
- Assist in maintaining SQL Server High Availability solutions, including Failover Cluster Instances (FCI) and Availability Groups.
- Support application releases by validating database changes before and after deployments.
- Work closely with development teams to review database designs, improve query performance, and implement long-term solutions to recurring issues.
- Produce and maintain documentation for database administration procedures, incident investigations, recovery processes, and operational standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve database performance, automation, monitoring, security, and operational efficiency.
We think you’ll be a great fit if you have:
- Strong experience administering Microsoft SQL Server databases within production environments.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server architecture, including databases, tables, indexes, statistics, stored procedures, execution plans, and database relationships.
- Experience writing, troubleshooting, and optimising complex SQL queries.
- Experience investigating and resolving database performance issues.
- Experience administering SQL Server Agent jobs, maintenance plans, and scheduled database tasks.
- Good understanding of SQL Server backup, restore, recovery models, and disaster recovery processes.
- Experience supporting SQL Server security, including logins, users, roles, permissions, and least-privilege principles.
- Experience using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for administration, troubleshooting, and performance analysis.
- Experience performing controlled production database changes whilst maintaining data integrity and auditability.
- Knowledge of database monitoring, capacity planning, and performance optimisation techniques.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with developers, infrastructure engineers, and business stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a production support environment.
We think you’ll be a great fit if you have:
- Experience supporting SQL Server Failover Cluster Instances (FCI).
- Knowledge of Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC).
- Experience supporting SQL Server Always On Availability Groups and other High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HADR) solutions.
- Experience with database maintenance automation using PowerShell, SQL, or Python.
- Knowledge of index optimisation, statistics management, partitioning, and database performance tuning.
- Experience using database monitoring tools such as Redgate SQL Monitor, SentryOne, SolarWinds DPA, or similar.
- Experience working within ITIL-based support environments and incident management processes.
- Experience supporting cloud-hosted SQL Server environments (Azure SQL, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or SQL Server on Azure/AWS).
- Familiarity with database release management and deployment tooling.
- Understanding of database governance, auditing, and compliance best practices.

Success Measures (First 12 Months)
- Successfully administer production and non-production SQL Server environments with minimal supervision.
- Maintain high database availability while meeting agreed service levels.
- Improve database performance through proactive monitoring, query optimisation, and tuning initiatives.
- Successfully support database releases, upgrades, and maintenance activities with minimal business impact.
- Contribute to improvements in database monitoring, automation, backup, and recovery processes.
- Reduce recurring database incidents through root cause analysis and preventative improvements.
- Participate effectively in incident response, problem management, and post-incident reviews.
- Maintain accurate documentation covering database administration procedures, disaster recovery, and operational support.
